A Tribute to the Groundbreaking Visual Effects in The MaskThe 1994 film The Mask starring Jim Carrey was a comedy fantasy that people loved for its silliness, but that overshadowed the technical skill required to make it as silly as it was. Watching it today, almost 30 years later, the movie's visual effects are taken for granted. At the time, they were fairly experimental, and it took a lot of work to pull them off. Mixing live action and computer-generated animation had never been done before, and every scene in which it happened had to be shot in multiple ways to be blended later. Therefore, the timing and spacial orientation of each element had to be coordinated to work together even when they weren't shot together. When this kind of work is done well, you are less likely to notice it, so it's a mixed blessing for the animators and computer pros who put in so much work to pull it off. -via Digg#CGI #visualeffects #animation #TheMask
Karel Zeman's Special EffectsCzech filmmaker Karel Zeman spent most of the 20th century pioneering animation techniques. He began as an advertising producer, creating animated film ads in the '20s and '30s. Zeman began making stop-motion films in the 1940s, using puppets and special effects techniques he developed. He experimented with stop-motion, glass animation, miniatures, forced perspective, layering, and 3D techniques. As you can see in the compilation above, he used a wide range of tricks to get to the finished product. In the 1950s, Zeman began a series of six feature films that combined animation with live-action footage, which he is most famous for. Many of Zeman's works are available at YouTube. The full 1980 documentary by Zeman, from which the above compilation was taken, is available online, but the film quality is poor. -via Everlasting Blort#movies #animation #specialeffects #KarelZeman

How the Opening Song in Encanto was AnimatedOn Instagram, Disney animator Jonah Sidhom revealed his process of animating the famous family scene in the opening song of the Disney film "Encanto."To avoid getting overwhelmed, he started with the most basic cubes to represent the various family members. Then, he figured out poses for everyone to land in. He emphasized the shape of the letter M to represent the Madrigal family. He mentioned that his reference is never 1:1 with timing, but he used it to determine movement and foot placements. At the end of his post, Sidhom gave a shout out to dance consultant Kai Martinez who helped him with the dance elements. Martinez also suggested the amazing idea of revealing Abuela with the mom's skirts which was immediately approved by the directors.Video credit: jonahsidhom on Instagram#Encanto #Animation #Disney #Movie
This Tattoo Artist Made a "Betty Boop" Hand-Drawn Animation Using 76 TattoosLots of paper. Lots of pens. And tons of patience. These are an artist’s basic needs if he wants to make hand-drawn animation. While hand-drawn animation is already a challenging work of art, tattoo artist Phil Berge made things even harder for himself. He made an animation not through images drawn on paper, but through tattoos — 76 tattoos, to be exact. Just imagine the number of hours spent drawing every image! Now that’s dedication. The result is as great as the challenge, however. What a masterpiece!(Image Credit: Phil Berge via TikTok)#Animation #HandDrawn #StopMotion #Tattoo #Cool
