What Made Daniel Plainview Such a Terrifying Villain?

Nerdstalgic gave us a deep dive into the character of Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds, played by Christoph Waltz, and why he was so terrifying. Another villain who really stays with us is the cruel, cold-blooded Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis in the 2007 movie There Will Be Blood.

There was nothing subtle about Plainview. He is the ultimate bully, one you can never escape. He is cold, calculating, determined, and knows exactly how far to go to get what he wants from anyone who stands in his way. But Plainview is not just a parody. believable as a real person, which only makes the character more dread-inducing. Director Paul Thomas Anderson had Daniel Day-Lewis in mind when writing the script, now we can't imagine any other actors pulling the part off as well. He holds nothing back.

Daniel Plainview was a psychopath with no empathy for anyone outside himself, but still came across as the kind of person you might encounter in real life, and that's a nightmare. Not surprisingly, Day-Lewis won the Best Actor Oscar for his role. -via Digg
