The final episode of the two-season series The Walking Dead: World Beyond aired Sunday night. The limited series focused on a group of teenagers in the zombie apocalypse where the word "zombie" is unknown. The action is set ten years after the start of the apocalypse. The series is now over, but left us with an intriguing coda consisting of a five-minute post-credit scene that takes us to a different place altogether. The rest of this post contains spoilers in case you have been following the series but haven't seen the final episode yet. You've been warned.
SPOILERS BELOW
The scene takes place in what is believed to be France, as the characters are speaking native French. They refer to the beginning of the zombie outbreak and the scientists who weren't there to stop it. Did the virus first arise in France?
The scene contains a video communication with Dr. Edward Jenner of the CDC, who died in the first season of The Walking Dead. This doesn't help place the scene in time, because it becomes clear that this is a recorded video, as it keeps playing after the French scientist is no longer listening.
The dialogue mentions "variant cohorts," which imply that there are different zombie viruses.
The woman is shot through the head (which kills the victim permanently, from what we've seen), and then almost immediately reanimates as a zombie. She moves faster than any zombie we've seen, and appears to move with purpose. Is this a new kind of zombie from a virus variant?
Oh yeah, and something I missed because I haven't watched the series is that Jadis was on it. I'll have to look that up to know what's going on.
This scene seems to be setting up something new in the Walking Dead world. Why do that when World Beyond just ended and The Walking Dead is in its final season? Because there is more of The Walking Dead coming. Tales of the Walking Dead will be an anthology series that tells stand-alone stories, an unnamed spinoff featuring the characters of Carol and Daryl is planned, and the Rick Grimes movies are still in the works, although long-delayed due to covid.
