It would be surprising to see a bull taking a nap on the beach, would it not? Self-taught artist Andoni Bastarrika likes to startle (and amaze) people by creating three-dimensional artworks like realistic animal sculptures using wet sand. In comparison, ordinary sandcastles by the beach seemed too boring!
Bastarrika exhibits his life-sized sand sculptures at local Basque beaches in northern Spain. After dumping buckets of sand in an elevated cement platform, he uses his hands (and sometimes sticks) to mold the wet materials until he is pleased with the appearance.
To even enhance his artwork, he adds random objects to give it some oomph. For his bull, for example, he uses real horns on its head and rocks as its hooves.
The gifted artist has already created sand sculptures of a horse, shark, alligator, rhino, and an elephant. Of course, he has created different breeds of dogs too!
