Instead of a Billboard, HBO Refurbished a Basketball Court to Promote "Winning Time" Miniseries

To promote their latest show Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, HBO not only rolled out a glitzy campaign in the usual fashion, but also used the chance to celebrate the eponymous basketball team. To do that, HBO partnered with Project Backboard, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring old basketball courts and installing visual art, in order to transform a basketball court in Inglewood, California, as a love letter to the Lakers as well as the community.

The team then spent four months repairing cracks, repainting court lines, and replacing the nets and rims. Not only that, they also invited celebrated muralist David Flores to place his art on the court, inspired of course by the series. Of course, the Lakers’ signature purple, yellow and white figured prominently on the installation.

By doing this, HBO not only got to promote their new series but also left a lasting gift for the community.
