Disney's new movie Encanto is set in the mountains of Colombia, featuring songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It's the story of a family who has been blessed with a magical house and superpowers. Each of the family's siblings has a "special gift," all different so they are useful to the group, except Mirabel. Mirabel suffers from her sense of ordinariness, so you can guess that the plot revolves around her. Mirabel must be the one to save the day when it all starts to fall apart.
The gorgeous trailer for Encanto shows how far computer animation has advanced, with eye-popping colors and flowing motion that rival Disney's golden age of animated feature films. We also like the idea that Disney films are continuing their move away from defining a happy ending as a romantic coupling (up to Tangled) and more toward family bonds (Moana, Coco). After all, these are children's movies. Encanto is scheduled to open on November 24, the day before Thanksgiving.
