Ozzy and the Bat and Other Wild Tour Stories from Rock MusicA rock music concert tour can be pretty wild, spawning stories that fans and foes alike will tell decades later. It's where youth, fame, money, fans, press coverage, and often drugs and alcohol meet. Sure, the musicians are working, but they also need to blow off steam occasionally. When you are young and expected to be outrageous, and are shielded by money and fame, things can easily get out of hand. Then there are examples of performers just going with the flow, when stage antics go a little too far. While onstage during a performance in Des Moines, Iowa on January 20, 1982, Ozzy Osbourne reportedly bit the head off a bat that someone in the audience threw on stage. Osbourne believed it was made of rubber, so he picked it up and sank his teeth in—but as it turned out, the bat was indeed the real deal.“Immediately, though, something felt wrong. Very wrong,” Osbourne wrote in his memoir, I Am Ozzy. “For a start, my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid, with the worst aftertaste you could ever imagine. I could feel it staining my teeth and running down my chin. Then the head in my mouth twitched. Oh f**k me, I thought. I didn’t just go and eat a f**king bat, did I?”Osbourne was taken to a hospital after the show, and had to endure a series of rabies shots during the tour as a precaution. Forty years later, people are still talking about the incident. Some stories of rock yours are completely fictional, others have grown wildly in the retelling, but some are absolutely true.
