It's the slap heard around the world, and the birth of a new meme on the Internet.
During the 2022 Oscars, actor and musician Will Smith shocked the live audience and TV viewers worldwide by walking on stage and slapping comedian Chris Rock after the latter made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, saying, "Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2. Can't wait to see it."
In the ad-libbed joke, Rock had referenced a made-up sequel to the G.I. Jane movie, starring Demi Moore who appeared with a shaved head. Pinkett Smith had also shaved her head after she was diagnosed with hair loss or alopecia.
After initially laughing at the joke, Smith walked on stage, approached Rock and quickly slapped him across the face before walking back to his seat. Rock remarked, "Oh wow! Wow! Will Smith just smacked the sh-t out of me" while Smith shouted, "Keep my wife's name out of your f-cking mouth."
The altercation gave birth to a new meme called "Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock," which immediately went viral on Twitter.
