Squid Game is reigning as Netflix's most popular series, so no one is surprised that they've officially announced a second season. There was no doubt even last year that Netflix would want more, but the question was whether creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk could get it done. He has announced it's a go!
Hwang, who also wrote, produced, and directed Squid Game, released a statement giving some clues about season two. Our hero, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) will return, as teased by the very final scene in the first season, presumably to investigate and expose the people behind the game. Also returning will be the mysterious "Front Man" (played by Lee Byung-hun) who wears a mask. We will also be introduced to the "boyfriend" of the giant animatronic doll from the first season. Hwang also tells us that Gi-hun will be a more aggressive, action-oriented character, which tracks with what we know about his post-game decision.
Hwang then compared the Squid Game winner’s narrative arc to the moral tests in Star Wars. “As for the Front Man who was also a past winner but became a Front Man, it’s like Darth Vader,” he said. “Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right? I think that maybe Gi-hun will go through a certain critical point where he is put through a test as well.”
Squid Game season two will not be ready until 2023 or 2024. Considering it took 12 years to get the show onscreen originally, that's not too bad.
