The Story Behind Spaceballs' Pizza the Hutt

When you read lists of the best Star Wars movies (and there are a lot of them, because everyone has an opinion), sometimes they will include Spaceballs. Mel Brooks' 1987 parody of Star Wars is hard to forget, and the ridiculous characters are one of the reasons. Who could ever forget Pizza the Hutt? The knockoff of the Star Wars space villain Jabba the Hutt was a disgusting life-size lump of dripping pizza toppings. That's a lot of trouble for a simple pun, but it was well worth it. Or was it?

Pizza the Hutt only appeared in one Spaceballs scene, but it took a team of special effects guys and puppeteers, two actors, and a celebrity voiceover to make it happen. The suit was simple, but once it was on, there were more pizza toppings added. Real food, but not the kind you'd want to eat. Instead of cheese, they simulated dripping hot cheese by using pancake batter! Mel magazine talked to the production crew that made Pizza the Hutt happen, and they explain the pains they went through to make the character come alive. You don't want to read while you're eating.
