J. Robert Oppenheimer is known as the "father of the atomic bomb." One of the lead researchers for the Manhattan Project, he was the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II. Christopher Nolan directed the biopic Oppenheimer, focusing on the physicist's role in the creation of nuclear weapons. The film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppemheimer, and features Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, and Kenneth Branagh, among other well-known actors. Nolan's reported $100 million budget was also spent on using IMAX cameras for filming, and using real explosives to recreate the Trinity nuclear test instead of CGI or historical footage. Oppenheimer will be released to theaters on July 21, 2023, on the 78th anniversary of the world's first nuclear explosion.
