The Hobbit Presented as a BBC Weather Report

The Shipping Forecast is a thrice-daily broadcast on BBC Radio reporting about weather conditions near the British Isles. In 2015, this gentleman from Tolkien's homeland summarized The Hobbit in the form of this broadcast, including the cadence of the presenters.

I'll admit that my American self had never heard of what has become a cultural institution in the United Kingdom. It's hard to understand without the map of 31 regions around Britain that the BBC announcers refer to. I can, though, understand why an island nation would prize regular and precise weather reporting about the surrounding waters.

Some people enjoy falling asleep to the forecast, which you can try with this 5-hour compilation. BBC Radio has leaned into this traditional use of the Shipping Forecast and has special hour-long versions for bedtime purposes.
