The Gangs of New York to Become a Television Series

The 2002 Martin Scorsese film The Gangs of New York is in development to become a streaming series. The proposed series, set in 19th century New York City, will not bring back any of the characters from the original, but will features new stories from the same period. Even without the star power of Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, the show will be highly anticipated because Scorsese himself is an executive producer and is slated to direct at least the first two episodes.

“This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film,” Scorsese said at the time of that announcement. “A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.”

It won't be Scorsese's first foray into a historical TV series about New York; he also had his hand in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, set in the early 20th century. There is no word on what streaming service will carry the show. Read more about the TV adaptation of The Gangs of New York at Deadline. -via Boing Boing
