The Amazing Story of Eddie Munster’s Kustom Chain-Link Bike

The Munsters ran on CBS for only two season (1964-66), but left their mark on America's pop culture landscape. We remember the cool vehicles the family had: the family's Munster Koach and Grampa Munster’s Dragula, shaped like a coffin. Those vehicles were designed by master customizer George Barris. Barris believed that Eddie, the family's only son who happened to be a werewolf, needed a custom vehicle, too. Because actor Butch Patrick was only 11 years old, that was a bicycle. Barris designed and built a bike that had a heavy chain for a frame, a spider web windscreen, and an upholstered Victorian banana seat. Sadly, we never got to see Eddie ride the bike on the show, but Butch Patrick rode it a lot around the Universal Studios backlot, in costume, and got some publicity out of it.

That bike, believe it or not, is still around more than 50 years later. Read the story of the Munster bike's design and longevity at Vintage Everyday.
