The 2021 Inductees into the National Toy Hall of Fame include Sand, Like the Kind People Find For Free at the Beach

Many toys have come and gone over the years, decades, and centuries. Some of them have been lost through time and forgotten. Others are still remembered and played even to this day. Chess and playing cards are great examples.

The National Museum of Play, however, considers one toy to be "universal": sand. And it is a no-brainer why it is the case. First of all, it is present in nature in abundant amounts. Second, it's free-to-play! Literally!

Historians believe that we humans have been playing with sand ever since the time of ancient civilizations. Unsurprisingly, playing with sand and sand sculpting is still popular to this day.

The National Museum of Play has inducted sand to their National Toy Hall of Fame this year, along with the American Girl Dolls and the board game Risk. Check out the other inducted toys from the previous years over at the site.
