For sixteen years, Navajo leader Manny Wheeler led a project to dub Star Wars Episode IV into Navajo. This PBS video shows selections of the dubbed film, as well as introduces the Navajo voice actors. It explains that the worldview depicted in the Star Wars universe is familiar to the Navajo culture. At a practical level, it will also help extend the durability of the Navajo language in a time when the number of people who can speak it is in decline—a fate shared by many Native American languages.
