Song Lyrics Inspired by Literature

The subject was presented as hit songs that reference literature, so I automatically thought of that song by The Police "Don't Stand So Close to Me," in which one of the lines is "Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov," which is a direct reference to the novel Lolita. That's not included in the list, because these are songs that actually lift passages from major works of literature for song lyrics. It happens more than you know. The Doors, whose name was inspired by Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception, had often used lyrics from literature. One example is "L.A. Woman," in which the lyrics "city of night" is taken from the novel by that name by John Rechy. Rage Against the Machine uses slogans from George Orwell’s 1984 in their song "Testify." Read about eleven such songs and where they got their lyrics at Mental Floss.
