Ranking the Oranges in The Godfather

For more than 50 years now, film buffs have been discussing why oranges appear so many times in the movie The Godfather. They have been identified as a symbol the filmmakers chose to foreshadow when a death is coming, a representative product of the Sicilian mafia, a connection with the Old World from which the characters come, or to provide some color in an otherwise dark film. Francis Ford Coppola said the oranges coming right before a death were a coincidence, but after the first movie was analyzed as such, they deliberately used oranges this way in the second and third movies.

Despite Coppola's explanation, the oranges in The Godfather continue to be discussed. But no matter why they pop up in the movie so often, they always make people notice and often inspire a craving for the sweet delicious citrus. At least some of them do. Slashfilm ranks all seven scenes in the original film featuring oranges by how much we'd want to eat them, and why. Even if you don't like oranges (in which case, what's wrong with you?), the list will bring back memories of when you first saw The Godfather. -via Metafilter
