Playwright Dori Salois Puts a Feminist Spin on the Christmas Classic 'It's a Wonderful Life' with her Play 'She's At The Library'

Local playwright Dori Salois takes the story of the classic 1946 film It’s A Wonderful Life and spins a new modern take on the plot for her new play, She’s at the Library. The La Jolla resident took out George, the original main character of the film, and created a tale of what life would be like for his wife and other characters of the story without his existence.  “I just took George out of the picture and said, ‘Now what would have happened to Mary really?’” Salois said.

The playwright wanted to show what could have happened if Mary made her decisions without George’s influence, and at the same time introduce conflicts that affect the women of the 1940s. She’s at the Library, according to Salois, is "a fun, feminist take for Mary” while staying true to the time period. While there are some heavy themes present in the story, the show is still a light, Christmas story with many references to the original film.
