We've waited nine years for another Mad Max movie, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has no Max at all. But the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road should have fans of the series out in force next weekend when it opens officially on May 24 (there will be Thursday night showings). The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival this past Wednesday, where it received a standing ovation of seven minutes and 50 seconds.
The movie is the origin story of the character Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, before the events of Fury Road. Deadline's review says it may be the greatest Max movie yet. Germain Lussier at io9 says it surpasses Fury Road in every way. The Guardian praises Anya Taylor-Joy for bringing emotion to the Mad Max world while being a thorough badass, and Chris Hemsworth is the perfect antagonist, with just the right amount of humor. Not all the reviews are this glowing, but no one thinks its a bad movie. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%, all from professional critics who got a sneak preview. That should give you something to look forward to!
