When you visit an In-N-Out outlet, you may notice the palm trees lining its exterior. And not just any palm trees, but two crooked palm trees that form an X shape. Well, this interesting arrangement IS intentional and it’s all thanks to In-N-Out Burger’s founder, Harry Snyder.
According to In-N-Out’s communications specialist, Snyder got the inspiration to plant palm trees this way from a 1960s movie called “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad World”. The film depicted a gang of motorists in search of a stack of cash planted underneath a big W. Near the end of the film, the group arrived at a park with a formation of palm trees shaped like the letter W, where the treasure was buried. Snyder lifted this idea in order to create something iconic to mark his restaurants, replacing W formation with an X. He began planting them this way outside of In-N-Outs in 1972.
