Alasdair Beckett-King’s parody is almost a little too on the nose. It’s reminiscent classic Star Trek, what with the references to anti-Communism, a nod of affirmation to Christianity, the psychological weakness of female characters, and the limited special effects. But I also see allusions to the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, especially with Altaria’s delightfully short hemline and the isolated mad scientist.
Do you see the rock formation behind Beckett-King’s captain? I’m pretty sure those are the Vasquez Rocks, which appeared in six different Star Trek episodes or films, most famously the battle scene from the Original Series episode “Arena.” It’s inevitable that Beckett-King will have a fight on them in the sequel to this short film.
