Disney Theme Parks' Splash Mountain Gets a New Name

The Walt Disney Company has announced its vision for the rebranding of the Splash Mountain attraction at its California and Florida theme parks. We knew since 2020 that it would turn to a theme based on the 2009 movie The Princess and the Frog, and now we get a name and a description. The water ride will be named Tiana's Bayou Adventure, and will feature a musical story in which Tiana and other characters from the movie host a Mardi Gras celebration. The announcement was made at Preservation Hall in New Orleans during ESSENCE Fest.

Picking up where the film left off, guests will join Princess Tiana, Naveen and jazz-loving alligator Louis on an adventure through the bayou as they prepare to host a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras celebration where everyone is welcome. Along the way, guests will encounter familiar faces, make new friends and travel through the bayou to original music inspired by songs from the film as they are brought into the next chapter of Tiana’s story.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure is scheduled to open in 2024. The rebranding of Splash Mountain came about in response to criticism over the the attraction's previous theme featuring the 1946 film Song of the South, which was pulled from circulation in 1986 due to its overt racism. You can read the history of Splash Mountain and how it became untenable at Smithsonian.
