De-Aging, Nazis, and the Space Race: Details on Indiana Jones 5

The character Indiana Jones was supposedly born in 1899. In the new movie Indiana Jones 5, the main plot unfolds in 1969, so the character would be 70 years old, which is a perfectly reasonable age for the 80-year-old Harrison Ford to play. But the movie begins in 1944 with an action sequence in which Indy fights Nazis. Jones looks as if he just stepped out of Raiders of the Lost Ark, thanks to de-aging technology. Ford told Empire magazine, “It’s a little spooky. I don’t think I even want to know how it works, but it works.” The producers used new ILM software to blend old pictures of Ford with the newly-shot footage. They even painstakingly recreated his jacket from that first movie. The opening set piece is standard for Indiana Jones movies, and sets up the action hero as a Nazi fighter.

The rest of the movie, set in 1969, concerns scientists that were brought from Nazi Germany into the US space program. The villain is a scientist named Voller, portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, who is loosely based on Werner Von Braun. Read more about Indiana Jones 5 at Empire magazine. The movie will open June 30, 2023. -via Variety
