Dedicated anime fans may go on “pilgrimages” to the locations of their favorite movies and series. Many animes are not set in just a generic vision of Japan, but specific locations within the nation’s 47 prefectures. Tokyo Weekender has a list of 47 animes set in each of Japan’s prefectures. They include the masterpiece Flying Witch, which is in Aomori, as visitor photos reveal in detail.
Here’s a challenge left out of the Tokyo Weekender article: Japan had a forty-eighth prefecture in the now-Russian island of Sakhalin. It won the southern half of the island in 1905 after defeating Russian in a war, then lost possession of it (and additional islands) to the Soviet Union at the conclusion of World War II. Is there an anime set in the now-lost Karafuto Prefecture?
Possibly: I gather that Golden Kamuy, which is primarily set in Hokkaido (northern Japan) includes scenes on Sakhalin.
