Oh, no. The next thing we might hear is that somebody has recreated Sword Art Online for this new VR device.
Palmer Luckey has revealed a new model of his Oculus that can rock your world (and lead you to your death, apparently). The inventor has built a new custom VR headset that can kill its user if they die in a video game.
Surprisingly enough, he also shared that he built it based on the popular anime and novel series that we mentioned in the earlier part of this article, Sword Art Online. For reference, that particular piece of media involves players who get trapped in a VR combat game where if they die in said game, they die in real life.
Luckey’s take on the scary VR handset is that charges built into the devices would explode if the user gets an appropriate game over the screen. So imagine if this gets released in the future, and you die while playing Minecraft or some other game… yikes.
Thankfully, the inventor is not making this VR piece available on the market. “At this point, it is just a piece of office art, a thought-provoking reminder of unexplored avenues in game design,” he said. “It is also, as far as I know, the first non-fiction example of a VR device that can actually kill the user. It won’t be the last.”
The inventor will keep tinkering with the concept and the technology at his own pace. He also shared that he has not tested it out (which is a bit of a relief to hear on our end, honestly).
